About me
Well, as you’re interested…
My name is Tim Walker (I use “T.A. Walker” for my musical activities, to avoid confusion with all the other “Tim Walker”s out there), and I am really rather English. I am currently in my mid-thirties, and live in southern England with my lovely wife Joy, and our equally lovely daughter Naomi (b. 2005/01/10).
By day, I am a mild-mannered Web site administrator. But, when I get out of the office… well, what then?
I am, to employ the understatement of the week, somewhat musically-inclined. I’ve been playing electric and acoustic guitar for over twenty years, and if I say so myself, think I’ve achieved a pretty good standard. I’ve also taught myself to a lesser level in various other instruments, including ukulele, mandolin, dulcimer, bass guitar, recorder and (most recently) drums—not least because I always admired the likes of Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Emitt Rhodes to be able to produce multitracked “one-man-band” recordings mostly or entirely themselves, and wanted to do the same.
My musical tastes are fairly diverse, though some common “threads” can be discerned. I tend to lean towards “progressive” rock and its various offshoots, and many of my favourite guitarists operate in that general musical area, such as Mike Oldfield, Anthony Phillips, Robert Fripp, Brian May, Phil Keaggy and Vini Reilly, to name but a selection.
Other genres I have a soft spot for include 1970s-style “electronica” (e.g. Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, David Bedford, Jean-Michel Jarre, and acts influenced by it, such as Air), and Sixties guitar pop/rock (Beatles, Byrds, Kinks, that sort of thing). I also enjoy some jazz (mainly the “ECM” style, by the likes of Eberhard Weber, Bill Frisell, Jan Garbarek and Keith Jarrett) and classical (largely baroque and 20th-Century composers; my favourite classical musician is probably pianist Glenn Gould).
Recording and music technology is another passion. ‘Sidingsound’ is the name of not only this Web site, but also our project recording studio, shoehorned into an upper-floor ‘broom cupboard’ in our house. Here, I produce recordings of instrumental and song-based material I’ve written solo and with Joy, and before long I hope to install the facility on this site for you to hear some of the results.
I also like computing and gadgets in general, and if they’re musical gadgets, well, that’s perfect
There’s a bit more to me than that, and I’ll add to the above when I have time. Stay tuned…
